Waking Ned, divine

Though unceremoniously sent to an early grave by ABC last November, Pushing Daisies returns to the network this Saturday to air the first of its final three episodes.

The whimsical mystery show about Ned, a pie maker who possesses the power to resuscitate the dead (with certain repercussions), remains one of my very favorites. Created by Bryan Fuller (of the also gone-too-soon Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me), Pushing Daisies was in its second season, just as eye-poppingly beautiful to beold and as whip-smart brilliant as ever. But as good TV all too often goes, the series was a critical favorite with a small but loyal fan base, and in the end that wasn’t enough.

Though I lament Daisies‘ early demise, it’s without a doubt the best show to feature pie in a supporting role since Twin Peaks (curiously, another cult show yanked by ABC after two seasons).

This last trio of episodes doesn’t quite wrap the series up, however, and there’s been some talk of a Pushing Daisies movie that could provide fans some closure. But while we anxiously await that news, we can dig deeper into the goings-on in and around The Pie Hole when the second season of Pushing Daisies arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on July 21.

Pushing Daisies airs this Saturday at 10/9 Central on ABC, for a three-week run.
