Pacifying a nation

May 28, 2009 0 Comments

The Simpsons stamps were officially issued on May 7, rolled out in time to put a happy, colorful face on yet another rate hike. The public was given a chance to weigh in with their (extra) two cents, however.

The U.S. Postal Service asked folks to vote online for their favorite stamp from Springfield’s first family: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, or Maggie. While my ballot was cast for Homer (his expression is priceless), it was the youngest member of the Simpson clan that claimed the top prize. Although Maggie appears most indignant in her postal pose, she indeed won after 916,927 votes were counted, leaving her dad to settle for a second-place finish. (Check out the complete results here).

Thus the people have spoken, though Maggie herself has done so only twice in the animated series’ 20-year history. In 1992, her first word, “Daddy,” was voiced by Elizabeth Taylor, while it was just earlier this month that fans were treated to a full sentence from the pacifier-sucking tot, this time courtesy of another Academy Award-winning actress, Jodie Foster.
