Billed as ‘The Final Chapter from Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection,’ the music video for Katy Perry‘s “Wide Awake” rivals only the title of Fiona Apple’s new album for the biggest mouthful in music at the moment.

But “Wide Awake” does a very good job at putting a bow on the two-year stretch of time in which Perry enjoyed an amazing run of seven top five singles from Teenage Dream (the album proper and its expanded sister), including six #1s (currently “Wide Awake” is at #9). With her career catapulted to stratospheric levels, things were humming along professionally for Perry while she also publicly experienced the highs and lows of marrying and later divorcing British comedian Russell Brand.

Those darker personal notes, the real-life counterbalance to the frothy fairytale of Teenage Dream, served as the inspiration for “Wide Awake,” written for her forthcoming 3D film, Katy Perry: Part Of Me. Likewise, they also provide a jumping off point for the song’s new music video.

Directed by Tony “Truand” Datis (Skrillex), watch as Perry navigates her way through a wicked labyrinth, suffers a breakdown, and ultimately delivers a well-timed comeuppance to a pretend prince, all with the guidance of her much younger self.
