What, Me Warrior?

Coldplay has revealed the music video for Mylo Xyloto track, “Princess Of China,” which, like its audio-only counterpart, co-stars Rihanna.

Directed by Adria Petty (Tom’s daughter) and Alan Bibby, the clip strongly references both the Buddhist female figure Guanyin, who legendarily possessed a thousand arms, and a much more modern-day source, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, whose flying, warring characters were armed in a different way.

Thorny cultural co-option issues aside, “Princess Of China” does make for a stunning visual piece. Nothing against Coldplay’s Chris Martin, but Rihanna handily steals the show. Now, if Guy Berryman had shown up wielding a sword…

I still haven’t nailed down which song the ’80s-style synths on “Princess Of China” remind me most of — somewhere between The Cars’ “Drive” and a track from the decade’s latter half. Cutting Crew’s “Been In Love Before”? Breathe’s “Hands To Heaven”? It goes on and on, and on and on and on.
