Turn It Up

Net ’nette of 2010

For reasons unknown, Dragonette and I haven’t synced up to date. I absolutely adore Fixin’ To Thrill, the Canadian synthpop trio’s sophomore effort from 2009, but didn’t discover the album until this past January, and then only got around to declaring my devotion to Dragonette in March (echoing the sentiment again in July). With a little over a day left in December, I’m determined to catch up.

While I’ve been lagging behind, the band was going gangbusters, with 2010 proving to be quite productive. Dragonette collaborated on dance tracks with Kaskade in April (“Fire In Your New Shoes”), Don Diablo in October (“Animale”), and earlier this month, Martin Solveig (“Hello,” following 2009’s matchup, “Boys & Girls”). The music video for “Hello,” filmed at the French Open and featuring real-life tennis pros Nocak Djokovic and Gael Monfils, premiered back in July.

During the summer months, Dragonette didn’t neglect their primary focus, premiering a new single in July (“Our Summer”/”Volcano”) and their Mixin’ To Thrill EP in August. That release featured those two songs, one other new tune (“My Things”), and seven remixes of tracks from Fixin’ To Thrill (including two from Don Diablo). The trio performed a set at Lollapalooza in Chicago, kicking off a two-month North American tour that included an appearance at San Francisco’s Folsom Street Fair, which I boneheadedly missed.

Take a listen to Dragonette’s twitchy “Our Summer,” a delicious mix of The B-52s, Prince, and Outkast:

While 2010 definitely goes down as a busy year for Dragonette, they still haven’t quite caught fire. They’re currently finishing up their third LP, which I hope helps right that glaring wrong. And I plan to do my part to help, resolving to keep up with the trio in 2011.
