Track of the Moment

Mama Approves

Back in August, Big Boi joined Swedish electro R&B band Little Dragon on stage in Austin, Texas, to premiere their collaboration, “Mama Told Me.” The supremely Prince-ly jam was to appear on the Outkast rapper’s new solo album, Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors, out next month.

Slated as the album’s first single, the parties were unable to agree on business terms related to the song in time. So Big Boi wrangled Kelly Rowland to step in for Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano on vocals, and the revised “Mama Told Me” single was officially released today.

While it really would have been a dream for Little Dragon to have stepped out in such a big (Boi) way, I’m still digging the throwback track. The Purple One-inspired gated Linn snares remain intact, and Rowland brings the soul. Big Boi may be the headliner, but for my money, his raps are beside the point here.

Plus, I’ll always be in Kelly’s corner whenever she’s part of something upbeat. Mama approves.

While things didn’t work out in time for “Mama Told Me,” Big Boi tweeted that he and Little Dragon recorded a new track last Friday for Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors.
