Video Premiere

Video ‘Hook Up’

April 21, 2009 1 Comment

Monday brought the MTV premiere of Kelly Clarkson’s new video for “I Do Not Hook Up,” the second single from All I Ever Wanted.

Though the poptastic follow-up to “My Life Would Suck Without You” sounds like another surefire #1 hit, the clip for “I Do Not Hook Up” is a mega meh disappointment. I don’t know what my expectations were prior to watching, but I certainly didn’t think I’d see Kelly climbing atop a bar a la Coyote Ugly (even if there’s a bit of humor in that moment):

But while the video could have been way better, there’s no denying just how hooky “Hook” is.

Purchase Kelly Clarkson – “I Do Not Hook Up” via iTunes, Amazon MP3.

Maybe I’m analyzing too much, but the message of the song and the video don’t seem to mesh. The video portrays the behavior of a girl who seemingly DOES hook up, and yet the message claims otherwise. What the hell? I understand that cheap sex sells, but when the song is anti-cheap sex, she still uses cheap sex to sell the anti-cheap sex song. It’s baffling and upsetting. Is she being ironic ala Jewel with her “intuition” video? Doubtful. – LC
