The Rec Room: Paul Epworth recommends Barbatuques

While producer Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence + The Machine) could have used Twitter on Monday solely to promote a pair of albums set for release on Tuesday that he’d had a hand in — Friendly Fires’ Pala finally made it to the U.S., and Foster The People issued their debut, Torches — he posted a link to a 2004 live performance from Brazilian body-percussion group, Barbatuques.

Listen, and you’ll see what so moved Epworth to share the clip. “Baiana” is beyond amazing, and only further cements a fascination I’ve had for Brazilian rhythm and percussion since hearing Paul Simon’s “The Obvious Child” for the first time back in 1990. The fact that Friendly Fires’ “Live Those Days Tonight” tapped that very same memory, a track Epworth co-wrote and produced, makes this world of connections closer still.

Purchase Barbatuques – “Baiana” via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
