Art of the Divas

August 24, 2009 9 Comments

Posters promoting the upcoming VH1 Divas reboot hit the streets of Los Angeles and New York City today, plastered on billboards and bus shelters.

London graffiti artist Maximilian Wiedemann was commissioned by the cable network to paint portraits of Kelly Clarkson, Adele, Leona Lewis, and Miley Cyrus, plus one surprise Diva to be revealed later. (Jordin Sparks also is joining the Divas party, but doesn’t rate this artistic treatment.)

Widemann’s works will also be featured in advertisements in Rolling Stone, USA Today, and other pubs, so don’t fret if you don’t live on either coast. Plus, you can see ‘em all up close here, anyway.

While I do love me some Kelly, of the four, Adele’s my favorite. Can’t go wrong with the Union Jack, and real divas know how to rock a crown. (Still waiting for someone to convince me why Miley’s invited to this celebration.)

VH1 Divas premieres live on September 17 at 9/8 Central.

Who's the surprise Diva? You just can't say there's another one but not tell us her name.

  • John

I wish I knew, but unfortunately that's a surprise that VH1 is keeping under wraps. But what I didn't know until just now is that Paula Abdul is handling hosting duties.

Think she'll stick to speaking and not singing? In either case, we're in for a treat 'cause the whole thing is live.

Do you think the surprise Diva that has been painted could be Paula Abdul? Or she being just the host rules her out of that possibility?

If I had to give a name as to who is the surprise Diva I would say Whitney Houston.

  • John

Could very well be, if she was just announced. I don't remember hearing anything about Paula being a part of the show until I just looked at the VH1 site, so maybe. Whitney returning to VH1 Divas would make sense, marketing-wise, another angle in Clive Davis' comeback plan. There's been some scuttlebutt as to whether Whitney can still hit the high notes, and that would be a good platform to show she can (if she still can, of course).

Or the surprise Diva could also very well be Mariah Carey with a new album to promote next month. WOuldn't it be great to have Whitney and Mariah on the same Divas show?

  • John

That would add some legitimacy to the title of the show, certainly. I do feel this year's lineup is skewing a bit too new/young. But I guess it's all about getting eyeballs vs. sticking to the definition. Barbra Streisand has a new album to promote (and she was invited to perform at least twice before), but she wouldn't quite fit into this 'pop Divas' format. Maybe Christina Aguilera?

Toni Braxton is also preparing a new album to launch this Fall. And I wouldn't mind to see Divas like Vanessa Williams, Roberta Flack, Carly Simon, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Dionne Warwick, Anita Baker or Sheryl Crow.

About Barbra, as much as I would love to see her doing "Divas" everyone knows she doesn't work with anyone else but herself. But she is one of the true Divas without a doubt.

Oh, Anonymous, I haven't a clue as to who you are, but you mentioned a whole bunch of my favorites right there. That would definitely be a dream lineup.
