O Christmas Free: Nathan Fake, The Golden Filter

Christmas music isn’t all candy canes, gingerbread, and other sweet treats. Some prefer to serve up a more twisted take on the holiday (see Lady Gaga’s innuendo-decorated “Christmas Tree”). So after showcasing more mainstream tunes full of (mostly) good cheer, here’s a pair that present a stranger side of Christmas, if not a wee bit creepy.

Nathan Fake samples the intro from The Carpenters’ lite-FM classic “Merry Christmas Darling,” speeding it up and slowing it down to create a nearly 10-minute production the English electronic musician calls, “Xmas Rush (Dub).” Set against a beat and laser-like keyboard sounds, Karen Carpenter’s voice fades woozily in and out, creating a spooky Ghost-of-Christmas-Past effect.

The whole thing’s a bit hypnotic, though it would be improved by deleting the discordant middle, a chunk that sounds as if Fake is aimlessly futzing around. If you’re attending a Christmas bash, the novelty of “Xmas Rush (Dub)” could either get guests grooving or completely clear the room. Consider bringing “Christmas Rush (Dub)” as a dual-purpose host or hostess gift. Hear here:

Down at the very bottom of the stocking, you’ll find something much more unsettling. New York synth-disco duo The Golden Filter have covered Psychic TV’s “White Nights,” a song that sounds merry enough if you don’t listen too closely.

Dig into the tune’s history, however, and you’ll discover that these “White Nights” refer not to some peaceful snowy landscape, but cult-leader Jim Jones’ mass-suicide practice sessions with his Jonestown followers. The song’s lyrics are composed of quotes (direct and paraphrased) from Jones’ final speech, with the chorus, “Santa Claus is checking his list, going over it twice/To see who is naughty and who is nice,” a rhyme the Peoples Temple leader used to make the Jonestown kids paranoid.

Now if you can stomach all that while listening to this… hear here:
