From the late ’80s through the early ’90s, Exposé enjoyed quite a chart run. After exposing (natch) the freestyle dance genre to the masses with hits like “Come Go With Me,” “Point Of No Return,” and “Let Me Be The One,” the Miami-based trio discovered its softer side with “Seasons Change,” which went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
All told, Exposé‘s first seven singles reached the Top 10, the first girl group to achieve that feat. While I appreciate the dancier side of Exposé in retrospect (at the time, I was only mildly enthusiastic), I fell head over heels for the dreamy “When I Looked At Him.” The pre-chorus vocals are what hooked me in 1989, and still do it for me now.
Of course, had I seen the video, that might have made this song even more of a keeper:
In 1996, Exposé were dropped by their label and the group disbanded. After a long hiatus, Jeanette, Ann, and Gioia reunited in 2003, and the trio has since been touring state fairs, casinos, and surprise, surprise, gay pride events.
In fact, Exposé takes the stage at this weekend’s très-gay Northalsted Market Days in Chicago. Catch ‘em in the act at 8:00 pm on Saturday.
