Another decade, another Scandal

July 11, 2008 2 Comments

Billboard reports that Scandal has reformed with plans to record a new album together, their first since 1984′s The Warrior. Following the success of the album (particularly the title single), lead singer Patty Smyth bolted to pursue a solo career.

Scandal did join VH1′s “We Are the ’80s” tour with Rick Springfield a couple of years back and you may have heard them on the county-fair concert circuit. That’s why the real news is the talk of upcoming studio time (that, and the addition of two new members to the lineup). According to the Billboard article, “The Warrior” was recently part of two popular video games (Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the ’80s), so maybe Scandal can score big once more as a result of the new exposure.

“The Warrior” first entered the Hot 100 in June 1984, finally peaking at #7 that September. I still find the video pretty entertaining (such costumes, such earnestness!), having watched it every time it appeared on TV that summer:

Thinking back to some of Björk’s more colorful costumes (no, not the swan dress), she may very well have cribbed Patty Smyth’s warrior style.

Here’s a suggestion for the 2008 Scandal: Ring up songwriters Holly Knight and Nick Gilder, and see if they’re willing to craft a worthy sequel to “The Warrior.” I wouldn’t accept another lyric as laughable as “Your eyes touch me physically” this time around, though.

I love when they reunited on Bands Reunited. And yes, The Warrior is a great song (and Warriors a great movie) but nothing tops Goodbye to You in my book.

Let’s not forget “Love’s Got A Line On You” (pulled from the same eponymous EP as “Goodbye To You”). I remember finding that gem in a discount jukebox-record bin at a five-and-ten store near my grandparents’. I loaded up every time I could convince my mom to stop there (much to her dismay and delay).
