Tennis, anyone?

February 3, 2011 3 Comments

Could you survive eight months in a sailboat with only your signficant other as company? Even with the occcasional stopover, sharing so much time in such close quarters and the fact that my sea legs are weak at best, my answer is no (such are the bright-lined boundaries of relationships).

But Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore, the husband-and-wife team who call themselves Tennis, did just that, and went one better. Upon returning to land, the Denver duo scored their lengthy sailing excursion in song. Cape Dory, Tennis’ debut album, serves as a diary of the then-unmarried couple’s time along the Atlantic coastline, a set of sunsplashed tunes that hit my ’60s girl-group sweet spot. (The Cape Dory cover art, however, confounds; with its font and Moore’s bodysuited pose, it says ‘totally ’80s’ to me.)

Nostalgically sweet and innocently charming, Tennis’ Cape Dory sounds so effortless in execution. Could it all really have been so easy-breezy for the couple? Though the reponse to Cape Dory has been quite positive, Riley and Moore don’t appear to harbor any assumption of having a huge career down the line, preferring instead to consider Tennis a hobby at most.

Listen to the gently rocking “Marathon,” and see if you’re not swayed by Tennis’ lo-fi pop — game, set, match:

I feel like I liked Tennis a lot more, before I saw this album cover artwork- is that pose even physically possible?
And a hobby at best? Why wouldn't they ride this thing out as long as possible?

They remind me of Best Coast- maybe the 60s/girl/retro sound "court" is getting to crowded?

For me, the cover art came first, and then I listened to the music. So it was a total upending of expectations. Good, since I dig that sound, but thought it was going to be '80s influenced, not '60s.

And yeah, I hear ya on the Best Coast comparison (and kudos on the pun). I do think this sound might get played out shortly, though new albums are on the way from Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls. Maybe that's why Riley and Moore don't want to be boxed in re: Tennis.
