10 Spinworthy Cover Songs

March 30, 2014 0 Comments

No better time to do a cover-song clearout on Popservations than the first couple of weeks of spring.

For various reasons, these recent renditions missed out on receiving the full-feature treatment, but all are worth a spin. Some are free downloads.

London Grammar – “Devil Inside” (INXS cover)

The British trio covers the Aussie sextet’s 1988 single to promote the fourth season of HBO’s Game Of Thrones.

MØ – “Say You’ll Be There” (Spice Girls cover) (iTunes)

The Spice Girls’ album was the first she ever bought, and Karen Marie Ørsted (aka MØ, pronounced “moo”) still draws from their Girl Power. “I felt like they were talking to my soul,” she told Billboard.

Charli XCX, Jannelle Monae cover Robert Palmer – “Simply Irresistible” (SoundCloud D/L: Charli XCX)

Repping different sides of the pond, Charli XCX and Janelle Monae each dressed up a version of Palmer’s 1988 #2 hit, recorded to support E!’s Live From The Red Carpet on Oscar night.

Skylar Grey covers Robert Palmer – “Addicted To Love”

Lots of love for Robert Palmer in 2014 (also see Ingrid Michaelson’s “Girls Chase Boys” video, an homage to his models-as-backing-band conceit), Grey covered his signature hit for the trailer to another remake, Endless Love.

Chvrches cover Lorde – “Team”

THUMPERS cover Chvrches – “Lungs”

Haim covers Beyoncé – “XO”

Twin Shadow feat. Samantha Urbani covers The Smiths – “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” (SoundCloud D/L)

Spazzkid covers Alice Deejay – “Better Off Alone” (SoundCloud D/L)

Queen Of Hearts covers AWOLNATION – “Sail”
